Long-Term Care Facilities: Pros And Cons

When you have an elderly relative that is starting to struggle on their own, they’re going to need somebody to look after them. One option is to bring them into your home and look after them yourself but that doesn’t always work for everybody. If you have a hectic lifestyle then you might not have time to look after a relative. Your other option is to consider putting them into a long-term care facility. It is a big decision to make and you should always consult your relative first. If you’re having trouble deciding what to do, here are the pros and cons of long-term care.

Lack Of Independence

One of the complaints that people often have about these facilities is that they remove the independence of the people living there. It is a matter of pride for a lot of people and they want to keep their independence for as long as possible. If your relative is worried about this, it might be better to set up a room for them with an over the bed table. That way they can have everything they need nearby and do things for themselves for longer. Read more here if you’re considering this option.

A lack of freedom is also an issue and residents sometimes feel like they are not able to do everything that they want to do. This can leave them feeling more like they’re living in a prison rather than a long-term care facility.

Perhaps the biggest con of long-term care facilities is the price. They cost a lot of money each year and the problem is that you don’t know how long they will be in there for. If you start to run out of money then there isn’t much you can do. This could end up landing you in serious financial trouble and the likelihood is that you’ll probably have to take them into your home in the end anyway.

Full-Time Care

One of the biggest pros is that they will have access to full-time care. If you have them in your home, you will probably be out at work all day so they will be left on their own. If there is somebody at home all day then it might work but if not then a long-term care facility might be the answer.

Professional Care

As well as being there full-time, the people that are caring for your relatives will be professionals, whereas you will not. If there are any serious complications then you aren’t going to be able to deal with it quickly and that could put them in danger. Having a team of professionals there all the time will ensure that they are safe.

One of the things that elderly people need as they start to deteriorate is a solid schedule. Living around your hectic schedule can be quite confusing and disorientating for them but they won’t have that issue when they are in a care home. The schedules will be very rigid which makes things a bit more comfortable for them.
